New BTCSD Members Wanted!
Our Club thrives off of the energy and enthusiasm
that new members bring to our group. If someone you know is interested in the
Boston Terrier breed, please take a moment and let them know about us. Our Club
provides invaluable support and information to the Boston Terrier owner, and
we'd like to see Club membership thrive along with the revived popularity of
this breed. Don't have a Boston? That's okay, many of us found our first Bostons
through other Club members. It sure helps to know what to look for, and what
to watch out for when searching for your first Boston Terrier!
New meeting location -
Tierrasanta Recreation Center. Guests are invited to join us
at our regular monthly meetings held on the second Thursday of the month,
from 6:45-8pm. Stop in and see what we're up to, and find out what our
Club is all about. Hope to see you there!!

For information on Boston Terrier Rescue, including what dogs are currently available for adoption, how to adopt a Rescue, or if you need to have the Rescue find a new home for your Boston, please call them directly at (619) 561-0652. The San Diego Boston Terrier Rescue is located in Lakeside, CA, just 30 minutes from downtown San Diego. They do whatever they can to help Bostons in need, providing food, shelter, medical attention, and love.
The Rescue is a non-profit, privately funded service for Boston Terriers and their families. They survive on what little funds they manage to get from adoption fees and donations. If you would like to contribute to their efforts, they are always in need of basic supplies: dog food, blankets, food bowls, toys, crates and carriers, and of course money. If you have something you'd like to contribute, please give them a call...the phone number is (619) 561-0652. Thank you!
If you or someone you know is considering adopting a Boston (or any pet), please take the time to answer the following questionnaire - and be honest with yourself! Not everyone has beliefs or lifestyles that are compatible with responsible pet parenting, and if we can realize this before we take that step then maybe we can avoid putting more animals' lives in jeopardy.
1. Do I really want a dependant for the next 10 to 15 years?
2. Do I have the patience to house train an animal? Do I want to?
3. Who will care for my pet when I'm away?
4. Can I commit to exercising my dog at least twice a day?
5. Can I afford the basic health care costs (annual shots, licensing, yearly check-ups)?
6. Can I afford unexpected expenses for illnesses or accidents?
7. What if my dog "barks" or "howls" a lot?
8. What if my pet is a "digger" or "scratcher" or claws at the furniture?
9. Am I or are any of my family members allergic to dogs or cats?
10. Does my budget allow for necessities like quality pet food, collars, leashes, bowls, carriers, and toys?
11. What if fleas or ticks become a problem in my yard or house?
12. Do I have the spare time in my day to spend returning my pet's companionship needs?
13. What if the personality or size of my pet as an adult is not what I wanted?
14. Am I willing to clean up the messes my pet creates?
15. What happens to my pet if I move?
16. Does everyone in my household like the idea of having a pet?
17. What if I have children - how will this affect my pet?
18. What happens if I am late getting home?
If any of the following questions would have been reason enough for you to get rid of your pet or abandon them, then you are not ready to adopt a pet! The above questions illustrate the realities of responsible pet parenting - it takes time, money, energy, enthusiasm, sacrifice, and of course responsibility to properly care for a living animal. When you adopt a pet, that animal becomes solely dependant on YOU! Please don't take pet adoption lightly... Pets are not like our cars or old clothes that we can simply "trade-in", throw away, or abandon - pets are like our children, and must be cared for and nurtured as such.
Recommended Reading On Boston Terriers
The BTCSD recommends a potential
Boston owner first get educated on the breed and its characteristics, requirements,
quirks, etc. One of the best ways to familiarize oneself with the breed BEFORE
actually getting one as a pet is to read all about them.
Click
here to visit The Boston Bookshelf...you can find some key books
about Bostons. You may either want to purchase the books for a lifetime of
reference, or perhaps you can find them at your local library branch. Either
way, you are taking a critical step in becoming a responsible, educated Boston
owner!
