Docs: ERPSS System Tour - Page 7
The statistical analysis of data measurements includes a wide realm of techniques, and an enormous number of considerations which cannot even be mentioned here. This section describes a few of the most commonly used programs that are available in the ERP software system; others are available for special purpose, and new ones are being developed all the time. The local ERPSS guru is probably the best source of information on how to accomplish a particular type of analysis.
Repeated measures analysis of variance is a fundamental statistical tool for detecting experimental effects in data measurements. Ranova (E1) is a program for performing repeated measures analyses, and includes corrections for violations of "sphericity" assumptions. One cannot expect to learn all the hows and whys of performing analyses of variance by reading the manual page. One must already know what one wants to do and why - the documentation is a guide to the mechanics, not a course in experimental design and analysis. For general information on repeated measures analyses of variance, refer to Keppel (Design and Analysis), or Winer.
Reading the results of a repeated-measures analysis of variance can be difficult if there are many factors with many levels. The program table (E1) allows one to summarize relevant comparisons in a large analysis and present them in an comprehendable fashion. It employs a text file to determine the format of the table and the specific data elements that need to be summarized. The manual page is sufficient for operating the program as well as designing the format file.
